1. Model Weight Memory
VRAM_weights = (Params_B × bpw / 8) × 1.15
Calculates raw tensor sizes plus 15% allocation overhead for layer metadata, KV projection tensors, and memory alignment.
2. Key-Value Cache
KV = 2 × Layers × KV_Heads × Dim × Context × Bytes
Incorporates Grouped-Query Attention (GQA) ratios. FP8 KV halves cache memory; Q4_0 cuts it by 75%.
3. CUDA Runtime Buffer
Runtime = 0.5 GB + (0.000015 × Context)
Accounts for cuBLAS/CUDA driver context initialization, activation tensors, and scratchpad memory during forward passes.
How to Calculate VRAM for Local AI Models
To calculate the exact VRAM needed to run a local large language model without crashing, you must combine three distinct memory components: model weights, Key-Value (KV) cache, and runtime activation buffers. For model weights, multiply parameter count in billions by bits-per-weight, divide by eight, and add fifteen percent overhead for tensor metadata. For example, an 8-billion parameter model in 4-bit quantization (Q4_K_M) requires 4.92 GB of VRAM. Next, calculate the KV cache, which grows linearly with context window length and attention layers. At standard 8,192 tokens in 16-bit precision, an 8B model requires approximately 1.05 GB for attention state, while expanding to 32,768 tokens demands 4.20 GB. Finally, allocate approximately 1.2 GB of VRAM headroom for the CUDA runtime context and desktop display manager. In our workbench tests, consumer GPUs with 8GB VRAM comfortably run 8B models at 4k context, while 70B models strictly require 40GB to 48GB VRAM.
